In addition, some sad news. Unfortunately, the management of The Polar Bear have informed us that they just learned the building is to be sold by their brewery & will not remain a public house. They are soon to be out of jobs & we are soon to be without a venue.
Therefore it seems almost certain that the July 13th date will be the last at The Polar Bear & maybe the last anywhere. As for the future, some time is needed for reflection as this is a very recent development. Any news will of course appear on the Tanz Macabre LJ first.
So, come down to Tanz Macabre for 'An Evening Of Terpsichorean Terror'. It may well be your last opportunity!

Well, it's been about a decade since I last DJed at Camden Palace (now called Koko) and I've gotta say I love what they've done to the place. The decor is much more oppulant and accentuates the architecture to give an extremely gothic feel to the whole place. As for the air conditioning... all I can say is... WOW! Despite it being hot and muggy outside, inside the temperature was wonderfully cool and airy, especially upstairs.
Having planned to get there earlyish to familiarise myself with the DJ setup while it was quietish, delays in leaving followed by heavy traffic crossing the river because the Kingsway underpass was closed, meant we didn't get there until about 10:45. Fortunately, since I was on immediately after the band, I just dropped off my stuff and planned to use the time the band were on to figure stuff out. Dual CDs and dual decks, looked simple...
So the band came on and I went down to the DJ balcony, opened my box, and realised I'd left one of my CD folders at home. Good start! No big deal though, I've still got plenty of stuff. Put a CD into the funky CD players and figure out the keycode combinations to cue stuff up properly (old Nintendo cheat codes came to mind here) then pulled out some vinyl. Hmmm.. No stylus on the decks 0.o Ask the sound guy and the video/lighting guy and neither knew anything. Thunder found someone from the venue and they didn't know about styuses either, so I resigned myself to losing all the vinyl I'd brought too (yes, I still use vinyl). Ho hum, glad I always bring far to much music, lol. Then seconds before the band came off, someone showed up with a pair of styluses, so I got all my vinyl options back, yay!
'Course, by this point I'd thought of so many different things to play, and things to play instead of things I couldn't play, and things I could play again instead of the things I couldn't play but now could... any rudimentary plan of what I wanted to play was out of the window. So, back to plan A which had two rules: 1) Play goff stuff 2) Play shortish tracks so I can fit more in, and if it bombs I can change direction before losing the floor too much
Other than that, I didn't really have any clue what to expect. I tried to stay away from the 'biggest' tracks, whilst at the same time keeping a reasonably jumping floor. The crowd were great, and luckily seemed to enjoy what I played. I didn't take a copy of my setlist, so from memory, here's what I got up to:
DJ Ben 12:40ish - 1:30
Siouxsie & The Banshees - Overground Xmal Deutschland - Inccubus Succubus II Sisters of Mercy - Body Electric Bauhaus - Lagartija Nick London After Midnight - Kiss (Ra Mix) Merry Thoughts - Pale Empress Garden of Delight - Shared Creation Joy Division - Dead Souls Christian Death - This Is Heresy Dead Kennedys - Holiday in Cambodia Killing Joke - Eighties The Damned - New Rose Cure - Hanging Garden
Great venue, great atmosphere, great night. Big thanks to Catasha and Thunder for offering me a guest slot. Best of luck for the next one!
Oh, and the next Tanz Macabre will be on 13th July if you want more of the same! (/plug) |
